Effects of Adsorbates on Submonolayer Growth

چکیده
The effects of adsorbates on nucleation and growth of twodimensional islands is investigated by kinetic Monte Carlo simulations and rate equation theory. The variation of island morphology with adsorbate parameters is discussed and the temperature-dependence of island density in the case of immobile adsorbates is studied in detail. A set of rate equations for the description of nucleation in the presence of predeposited mobile and immobile adsorbates is developed.

Submonolayer growth with decorated island edges
We study the dynamics of island nucleation in the presence of adsorbates using kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of a two-species growth model. Adatoms (A-atoms) and impurities (B-atoms) are codeposited, diffuse and aggregate subject to attractive AAand AB-interactions. Activated exchange of adatoms with impurities is identified as the key process to maintain decoration of island edges by impurit...
متن کاملInterplay of Strain Relaxation and Chemically Induced Diffusion Barriers: Nanostructure Formation in 2D Alloys
We study the formation of nanostructures with alternating stripes composed of bulk-immiscible adsorbates during submonolayer heteroepitaxy. We evaluate the influence of two mechanisms considered in the literature: (i) strain relaxation by alternating arrangement of the adsorbate species, and (ii) kinetic segregation due to chemically induced diffusion barriers. A model ternary system of two ads...
متن کاملEffectsof Atomic Interactions in Two Component Submonolayer Growth
We discuss effects of the different chemical bondings on the island morphology and on the island density scaling in two-component submonolayer growth. Different regimes depending on the strength of the mutual interactions and on the relative mobility of species are described and studied by kinetic Monte Carlo simulations using a two-component solidon-solid growth model. Results for the temperat...
متن کاملInitial stages of Pt growth on Ge„001... studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory
We have studied the initial stages of submonolayer Pt growth on the Ges001d. We have observed several stable and meta-stable adsorption configurations of Pt atoms at various temperatures. Calculations indicate relatively high binding energies of Pt atoms onto the Ge lattice, at different adsorption sites. Our results show that through-the-substrate bonding (concerted bonding) of two Pt atoms is...

Pseudocapacitive properties of V2O5-based adsorbates supported on TiO2 nanoparticles, which form spontaneously as two-dimensional (2-D) nonautonomous surface phases (complexions) at thermodynamic equilibria, have been systematically measured. Surprisingly, surface amorphous films (SAFs), which form naturally at thermodynamic equilibria at 550-600 °C with self-regulating or "equilibrium" thickne...
